THE SWISS GRAND TOUR: BERNINA, MALOJA, FURKA & SAN BERNADINO

A quintessential Alpine journey begins with the Bernina and Maloja Passes. The Bernina Pass, at an altitude of 2,328 metres, connects the glitzy alpine resort of St. Moritz with the Italian town of Tirano. Unlike many seasonal passes, it is open year-round, offering an exhilarating drive through awe-inspiring landscapes. The Maloja Pass, a mere 30 kilometres in length, is fascinating for its geographical contrast. Its northern approach is remarkably flat, while the southern descent is a steep, thrilling series of 22 corners, a technical marvel constructed in 1827. Historically, it was a crucial Roman and medieval trade route, and today it is one of the most exciting drives through the region. For those who seek a blend of cinematic drama and raw driving pleasure, the Furka Pass is a must. Rising to 2,429 metres, this route gained legendary status after its appearance in the James Bond film Goldfinger, with its 36 hairpin bends and steep gradients. The pass offers breathtaking views of the Rhône Glacier, and while the famed Belvedere Hotel is now closed, the spirit of adventure that drew 007 here remains. The Gotthard Pass represents a centuries-old connection between different cultures and languages. While the modern Gotthard Tunnel serves as a swift alternative, the old pass road, the Tremola, offers a journey back in time. This five-kilometre stretch is paved with the original cobblestones, making for a truly memorable driving experience. Here, opt for a slower, more deliberate pace, allowing yourself a moment to savour the history beneath your wheels and the stunning Swiss scenery, a peaceful detour away from the rush of modern life. As a gateway to the Italian-speaking Ticino canton, the San Bernardino Pass is a majestic journey through a landscape of gleaming rocks, moorlands, and ancient mule tracks. Spanning 30.6 kilometres with around 40 hairpin turns, the pass offers a smooth and scenic drive. At its summit at 2,066 metres lies the serene Lago Moesola. The pass is a perfect example of a route that connects not just places, but different cultures and climates, from the alpine grandeur of Graubünden to the mild "Swiss Riviera" of Ticino.

THE AUSTRIAN & GERMAN MOTORING LEGACY

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is widely considered one of the world's finest driving roads. Completed in 1935, this 48-kilometre toll road was designed not merely for transit but as an immersive experience through Alpine nature. With 36 hairpin curves, it weaves through the Hohe Tauern National Park, leading to Austria's highest mountain, the Grossglockner, and the longest glacier in the Eastern Alps, the Pasterze. Every turn reveals a new, spectacular view.

No motoring tour of the Alpine region would be complete without a pilgrimage to the legendary Nürburgring. Known as the "Green Hell," the Nordschleife circuit is a formidable 20.8 kilometres with 73 corners and a 300-metre elevation change. A true test of driver and machine, the road is publicly accessible, allowing enthusiasts to drive the same tarmac as racing legends. For those who prefer to be a passenger, professional-driven "track taxis" offer an exhilarating taste of the exciting driving circuit.

In Salzburg, Austria, the Red Bull Hangar-7 is a uniquely designed space housing a magnificent collection of historic aircraft from the Flying Bulls fleet and championship-winning Formula 1 cars.
