Golf in the Alps

A GOLFING ODYSSEY THROUGH THE HEART OF THE ALPS

True luxury doesn't come from the number of trips you've travelled, but from the quality time you have managed to spend with the people you love and the memories you have created together. The Alpine region—the sweep of mountains, lakes, and rolling valleys across Austria, Switzerland, Southern Germany, Northern Italy and Eastern France—provides the ideal setting for these memories. For the avid golfer, it's a paradise in a league of its own, with more than 500 golf courses in the region. As insiders to this exclusive world, we know the Alpine golf scene inside out, and we can curate the best golf experiences for connoisseurs of the sport who want to combine the challenge of the sport with awe-inspiring Alpine scenery, unique accommodation and culinary excellence. For us, golf is about more than just the 18 holes on the green; it is about the philosophy of the sport, the physical and mental challenge, and sharing that understanding and experience with those you value.

UNVEILING VIENNA'S GOLFING CROWN JEWELS

When one considers Vienna, the mind often turns to imperial palaces and classical music. Yet, just beyond the city’s opulent facade lie two golfing sanctuaries that are equally grand. Fontana Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-72 course designed by Doug Carrick and Hans-Georg Erhardt, beautifully maintained and challenging from the first hole to the last. From 2006 to 2008, it earned its reputation by hosting the European Tour’s BA-CA Open, cementing its place among Europe’s elite courses.

For a more leisurely experience, Golfclub Schloss Schönborn offers a journey back in time. Situated within the 104-hectare park of a magnificent palace, this 27-hole championship course was designed with profound respect for its historic surroundings. Instead of altering the landscape, the course was carefully integrated into the natural contours of the parkland. Playing here is a sublime experience, a chance to immerse oneself in Austrian history and tradition with every swing.

THE SALZKAMMERGUT: A SYMPHONY OF LAKES AND GREENS

The Salzburgerland region, with its idyllic lakes and pastoral hills, is home to a unique pair of courses. Golf Club Eugendorf, a classic 18-hole championship course, is known for its tranquil setting and its "old English Gentlemen's Club" atmosphere. The clubhouse also houses a golf museum, providing a fascinating glimpse into the game’s heritage.

Just a stone's throw away, Golf & Country Club Gut Altentann is a pilgrimage site for golf aficionados. This is the very first 18-hole course on the European continent designed by none other than Jack Nicklaus, the "Golfer of the Century". Nicklaus’s philosophy—that a course should reward precision and strategic thinking, while harmoniously blending with the natural environment—is on full display here. It is a course with a rich history, having hosted the "Austrian Open" from 1990 to 1992, and is welcoming the DP World Tour for a triumphant return in 2025. Playing here is an opportunity to walk in the footsteps of legends.

Mondsee and golfcourse
THE PEAK OF PERFECTION IN THE AUSTRIAN ALPS

Kitzbühel is globally renowned for its skiing, but for those in the know, its golfing scene is equally impressive. The area boasts a selection of championship courses, each with its own distinct character. Among these, Golfclub Eichenheim stands out. This 18-hole, par-71 course, designed by American architect Kyle Phillips, is nestled between the Wilder Kaiser and Hohe Tauern mountains, offering dramatic views of rock faces and dense forests. The on-site Grand Tirolia Hotel provides unparalleled service and comfort, making it a complete luxury retreat.

Another gem is Golfclub Kitzbühel-Schwarzsee. Founded in 1955, this 18-hole, par-72 course, is particularly known for its "mousetrap" 16th hole. This par-3 requires skilled golfers to play over a small ravine to a green, and this course has also been the scene of international tournaments. It’s an ideal place to test your skills with your companions, against the stunning backdrop of the Tyrolean Alps.

SWITZERLAND'S MAJESTIC GREENS

Switzerland offers courses that are both a challenge to the golfer and a feast for the eyes. Golf Club Bad Ragaz, one of the oldest in the country, has been attracting players since 1905. The course, a member of the "Leading Golf Courses" community, is an 18-hole, par-70 layout that has hosted the Swiss Seniors Open since 1997. The course, designed by the renowned Harradine family, is noted for its flat terrain on the floodplain of the Rhine River, which provides a change from the usual alpine slopes while still being framed by breathtaking mountain scenery.

For those who seek the height of alpine golfing, Golf Club Crans-sur-Sierre is set on a high plateau at 1,500 metres above sea level, offering golfers unparalleled views. The club has two famous courses, the Jack Nicklaus Course and the renowned Severiano Ballesteros Course. This latter has hosted the prestigious Omega European Masters since 1939, attracting legends such as Seve Ballesteros, Ernie Els, and Sergio Garcia. The dramatic, mountainous setting and the sheer history of the course make playing here a truly unforgettable event.

Further into the heart of the Swiss Alps, at an altitude of 1,444 metres, is the Golf Club Andermatt. This 18-hole, par-72 championship course, designed by renowned German architect Kurt Rossknecht, has been lauded as one of the most attractive and ecologically responsible in the Alps, earning the GEO label for its environmental standards. Its Scottish-inspired design and challenging layout have made it a favourite, and it's a testament to how world-class golf can coexist in perfect harmony with nature.

Franciacorta golfcourse
THE LURE OF THE ITALIAN LAKES: GARDA AND FRANCIACORTA

The area surrounding the Italian lakes is a sanctuary of refined elegance, where the art of winemaking and the game of golf are pursued with equal passion. Near the shores of Lake Garda lies Gardagolf Country Club. Founded in 1986, this club features 27 holes divided into the Red, White, and Yellow courses. Set between the Rocca di Manerba, a stunning promontory overlooking the lake, and the historic Soiano castle, the course is known for its undulating fairways and challenging water hazards. The club has hosted the Italian Open three times, most recently in 2018. The clubhouse offers a warm, inviting atmosphere and superb Italian cuisine, so golfers can unwind after a challenging game with a relaxing, indulgent afternoon.

Further west, amidst the rolling hills and vineyards of the Franciacorta wine region, is the Franciacorta Golf Club. Revived in 1984, this course is a testament to the vision of co-founder and wine producer Vittorio Moretti. The 27 holes are spread across three distinctive courses—the Brut, Satèn, and Rosè—each named after the region's famous sparkling wines. Golfers can enjoy the views of forests, vineyards and even a large artificial lake as they play across meticulously manicured fairways. Given the club's roots in viticulture, it's no surprise that golfers also have special access to world-class wine tastings at one of the club's partner wineries.
