Bespoke Austrian journeys & private mountain retreats

"Every lake belongs to the quietness desired by the swans"

- Munia Khan, poet

From its rolling hills in the East, to its towering mountains in the West, Austria is a destination that offers an extraordinary blend of imperial cultural richness and authentic Alpine experiences. For sophisticated travellers, a journey through Austria is an assurance of depth, discretion, and an intimate discovery of Europe's heart.

A TAPESTRY OF ALPINE MAJESTY: LANDSCAPES AND SERENITY

What is true luxury in the mountains? It is having unfettered access to majestic landscapes, with private trails and access tailored to your preferences and pace. The Austrian Alps cover a formidable 62% of the country, yet it is their diversity—from rolling Tyrolean pastures to the commanding peaks of the Hohe Tauern range—that sets Austria apart.

This is a world sculpted by glaciers, resulting in dramatic mountain passes and crystal-clear lakes fed by glacial meltwater. In the Salzkammergut region, the cobalt waters of Lake Fuschl and Lake Wolfgangsee provide the backdrop for a tranquil retreat, while the Hohe Tauern National Park, the largest nature reserve in the entire Alpine region, offers access to untouched wilderness and the towering Grossglockner, the country's highest peak. Beyond the slopes, one can witness the stunning power of nature at the Krimml Waterfalls, the tallest of its kind in Europe. Here, the lush forests and sparkling waters are not merely scenery, but a personal wellness experience, promoting a state of quiet Lebensgefühl—the authentic Austrian enjoyment of life.

THE IMPERIAL ECHO: CULTURE, HISTORY & GRANDEUR

Austria's story began long before the modern state. Back in 996 AD, it was simply known as the "eastern realm"—"Ostarrichi"—given its eastern border location of the Holy Roman Empire, a name from which the German "Österreich" was derived and used until today. Nomenclature aside, the region had long been inhabited and was known for its salt mines,  with the ancient salt-mining culture centred in Hallstatt dating back 7,000 years, making it the oldest salt mine in the world.

However, the defining epoch is that of the Habsburg Monarchy, which began in the 13th century and reigned for over 600 years, transforming Austria into one of Europe's most powerful and culturally rich empires. This heritage is palpably present in its great cities: Vienna, the imperial capital, boasts UNESCO World Heritage status, reflected in the magnificence of the Hofburg Palace and the sheer scale of the 1,441-room Schönbrunn Palace, the former summer residence of the Emperor and Empress. Salzburg, the Baroque brilliance of Mozart’s birthplace, offers cobbled alleys and the imposing Hohensalzburg Fortress.

Austria remains a significant centre of classical music—the birthplace of Mozart, Haydn, and Schubert, where the tradition of the Viennese waltz thrives. A VIP private box at the Vienna State Opera or a behind-the-scenes encounters with the majestic Lipizzaner stallions at the Spanish Riding School are cultural experiences unlocked only by insider access.

THE NEW AUSTRIAN GASTRONOMY: BEYOND THE CLASSICS

The authentic Austrian culinary experience extends well past the famous Wiener Schnitzel and Sachertorte. The most refined culinary pursuits are found in the hyper-local, seasonal, and sustainable traditions of the Alpine region.

In the mountain valleys, Michelin-starred chefs are reimagining local dishes focusing on pristine freshwater fish like Reinanke (whitefish), Hecht (pike) and Flussbarsch (perch) sourced from crystal-clear Alpine lakes. Savouring Zander (pikeperch) sashimi or delicately smoked char is a sophisticated departure from the usual. The region’s culinary secret is also found in its forests: an emphasis on wild game and meticulously foraged ingredients—from elusive Steinpilze (porcini mushrooms) to wild herbs and berries.

For an exclusive taste of tradition, a visit to a rural Heuriger—a rustic, family-run wine tavern nestled among vineyards—is essential, offering a taste of the traditional Brettljause platter paired with a crisp, local Grüner Veltliner or Blaufränkisch wine.
