Luxury Italian Alps & Dolomite tours

“The name of Italy has magic in its very syllables.”

- Mary Shelley, author

Northern Italy is a captivating mix of cultural depth, tranquility and exhilaration. From serenity at the lesser-known Lake Iseo, to the drama of the pink-hued peaks of the UNESCO-listed Dolomites, you will find something from the natural landscape that speaks to your soul. Travel north to the Alto Adige, also known as South Tyrol, a region of rich diversity where Italian and Germanic cultures merge, and where travellers will also find an exceptional local Pinot Noir. History lovers will appreciate the charming Tyrolean architecture as well as the area's many preserved medieval castles and fortifications, while those seeking an adrenaline rush can steer their classic cars towards the exhilarating switchbacks of the Stelvio Pass for one of the world's most coveted driving routes. The Italian Alps are the ultimate destination for exploration, connection and diversity.

THE ITALIAN ALPS: WHERE MOUNTAINS MEET THE METROPOLITAN

The region offers a diverse combination of landscapes, from the sharp splendour of the Dolomites to the placid elegance of the Italian Lake District. This geographical advantage offers a versatile experience for the curious traveller—from mountain pursuits to world-class golf and the ultimate in metropolitan style.

The region is a mosaic of unique provinces, each with its own character:

  • Lombardy: Home to Milan, Italy's fashion capital, where one can explore the iconic Duomo or the Palazzo Reale; and the major lakes at the foot of the Alps—Como, Maggiore, and Garda. The lakes, famed for their neoclassical villas and luxurious atmosphere, have been a retreat for the world’s elite since Roman times.

  • Piedmont (Piemonte): Literally "at the foot of the mountain", this region is known for its capital Turin, a city of grand arcades and royal palaces that once served as the first capital of unified Italy.

  • Alto Adige (South Tyrol): Bordering Austria, this area is a blend of Germanic and Italian cultures, framed by the pink-hued peaks of the Dolomites. It is a sanctuary for nature and recreation with its own historical claim to fame—the region’s museum in Bolzano houses Ötzi the Iceman, a Neolithic human from around 3,300 BCE, discovered frozen in a glacier in 1991 in the Ötztal Alps near the Austrian border.

  • Aosta Valley (Valle D’Aosta): Nestled against the Swiss and French borders, it is home to the renowned Mont Blanc and the pristine wilderness of Gran Paradiso National Park, the oldest in Italy.

  • Veneto: Offering access to both the southern flanks of the Dolomites and the renowned elegance of Venice.

  • Friuli Venezia Giulia: A northeast Italian region bordering Austria, Slovenia and the Adriatic Sea, it is one of Italy’s most celebrated regions for white wine production. It’s known for varieties like Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Grigio, especially in areas like Collio and Colli Orientali del Friulis.

THE ULTIMATE PURSUIT: PHYSICAL AND MENTAL WELLBEING

The scale of the Alps allows for the perfect setting for world-class skiing, mountaineering and hiking in the Dolomites and Aosta Valley. Avid golfers can also enjoy a private round at the Franciacorta Golf Club near Lake Iseo, or the historic Circolo Golf Villa d'Este, carving through pine and chestnut forests near Lake Como.

Those who prefer a private getaway can board a private Riva yacht on Lake Como to explore secluded coves and villas such as Villa del Balbianello, or take a scenic seaplane flight for an airborne perspective of the Italian Lake District. Alternatively, explore Cogne, a quiet village and gateway to Valnontey, one of the most pristine valleys in Gran Paradiso National Park, with trails leading to alpine huts and views of the Gran Paradiso massif.

Retreat to a sanctuary carved into the Dolomites, such as Lefay Resort or Forestis, where the focus is on physical and mental mindfulness in pristine natural surroundings. For a gentle outdoor excursion, a guided snowshoeing excursion through the serene Val Veny in the Aosta Valley offers a scenic and invigorating escape.

ITALIAN WINING AND DINING: AN EXPERIENCE LIKE NONE OTHER

Northern Italy’s cuisine favours rich, comforting flavours and some of the world's most lauded wines.

Oenophiles will love Piedmont, celebrated for its legendary red wines, Barolo, Barbaresco, and Barbera. Enjoy a bespoke tasting where you can sample rare vintages and learn more about the heritage of these famed Nebbiolo-based vintages.

Meanwhile, gourmands can enjoy a private truffle hunt in Alba, Piedmont, during the autumn and winter season (officially 1 October to 31 January) to unearth the prized white truffle. Savour authentic regional specialities like Vitello Tonnato (thinly sliced veal with a creamy tuna sauce) or the rustic Bagna Càuda (a warm anchovy and garlic dip). In Alto Adige, the rustic Toerggelen tradition—tasting young homemade wine with roasted chestnuts and cured meats like speck—offers a genuine taste of local harvest culture.

EMBRACE THE UNIQUE LOCAL CULTURE

The people of the Alpine North are defined by a strong sense of cultural identity and a deep respect for their ancient traditions. In Alto Adige, for example, the blend of Italian and Germanic heritage is palpable, from the architecture in towns like Bolzano to the prevalence of traditional dress. The locals value community, celebrating ancient customs like the Sacred Heart of Jesus fires, where crosses and hearts are lit on the hillsides on the third Sunday after Pentecost, symbolising faith and solidarity.

There are also unique Alpine festivals to enjoy. The Aosta Valley maintains its strong connection to the French-speaking culture of its past. Throughout the year, one can witness the veillà festivals, re-enactments of old customs, trades, and agricultural traditions. A lesser-known but deeply rooted tradition is the Batailles de Reines—a dramatic, non-violent confrontation between Alpine cow breeds to determine the "Queen" of the herd before they move to pasture.
