Exclusive French journeys & wine tastings

“How can you govern a country which has 246 varieties of cheese?”

- Charles de Gaulle, French general & president

From Lyon to the towering French Alps, Eastern France represents the pinnacle of Alpine refinement, seamlessly blending year-round adventure with impressive culinary depth. Here, Savoie heritage is preserved within authentic, elegant chalets, where traditional Alpine architecture merges with the comforts of private, world-class wellness. The region's valleys are home to intimate, lesser-known viticultural areas that yield exquisite local varietals, perfect for a private tasting. For a more profound connection with nature, the glacial landscape offers ephemeral views as well as more active exploration. For those looking for quality time away with loved ones, the integration of adventure, wellness, and culture within this region maximises every moment spent with family and friends.

ICONIC PEAKS & HISTORICAL LANDMARKS

The French Alps stretches across the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur regions, covering 40,600 square kilometres. The famous Mont Blanc, also known as La Dame Blanche (the white lady), sits within the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region and is the highest peak in Western Europe at 4,808 metres. This dramatic landscape of towering peaks, serene valleys and pristine glacial lakes is also home to France's first national park and one of the country's largest, the Vanoise National Park, well worth a visit for nature lovers.

Woven into this natural splendour is a rich history spanning centuries. Chambéry, the capital of Savoy, was once the historical seat of the House of Savoy, Europe's longest-ruling royal dynasty. A short distance away, Annecy is renowned for its medieval quarter, with its charming cobbled streets and canals, and home to the 12th-century Palais de l'Isle and the Château d’Annecy.

INNER & OUTER WELLNESS IN FRANCE

The French Alps offer both heart-pumping activities as well as opportunities for deep rejuvenation. While Chamonix remains the iconic home of world-class winter sport and the 1924 Winter Olympics, the modern luxury experience extends far beyond the well-skiied piste. Heli-ski access to pristine, secluded slopes can be arranged for discerning skiers, as well as private guides for challenging routes like the Vallée Blanche. Meanwhile, during the summer months, the mountains are ideal for hiking, mountain biking, and even private hot air balloon excursions over the Mont Blanc massif.

The region is also known for its wellbeing offerings. The French Alps are celebrated for their opulent spa retreats and thermal springs, such as those found in Évian-les-Bains and Saint-Gervais-les-Bains. In Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, you can indulge in luxurious thermal sanctuaries such as the QC Terme Wellness Spa, featuring heated outdoor pools with direct views of the iconic Mont Blanc. In nearby Megève, venues such as Les Fermes de Marie combine bespoke spa treatments with gentle outdoor activities, including private yoga sessions, meditation and silent walks designed to restore inner balance.

CULINARY HEIGHTS OF THE SAVOIE GASTRONOMY

The French are known for their culinary excellence, and some of the country’s most exquisite food can be found in the French Alpine region. Visitors can enjoy their pick of Michelin-awarded establishments, such as Albert 1er in Chamonix, where fine dining is offered alongside stunning views and tasteful décor.

However, the soul of Alpine dining lies in the authentic local dishes designed for sharing and conviviality. To experience cuisine Savoyarde in a traditional chalet setting, make sure you include classics such as raclette (melted cheese scraped onto cured meats and potatoes), tartiflette (a decadent potato gratin with bacon, onions, and the creamy Reblochon cheese), and the communal fondue Savoyarde (a blend of local Beaufort, Comté, and Emmental cheeses). The regional cheeses, notably Beaufort—known as the "Prince of Gruyères"—and the distinct Tomme de Savoie, are must-tries for gourmands. Don't forget to visit the Savoie vineyards, which yield crisp white wines like Jacquère and Roussette that perfectly complement the rich cuisine, often concluding with a glass of Génépi, the traditional herbal digestif.

A CULTURE ROOTED IN CONNECTION AND REFINEMENT

The culture of the French Alps is defined by a deep-seated connection to the land and a refined social etiquette. The people of the Savoie region are known for their strong identity and adherence to values that centre on community, family, as well as the rhythm of the agricultural calendar. You may find local festivals are tied to the farming year, celebrating the seasonal work with unique traditions. In villages, one might encounter the resonant sound of the alphorn, once used for long-distance communication and now occasionally featured at local gatherings that celebrate traditional folk music. And finally, don’t rush through your food. Meals are a cherished ritual, meant for unhurried connection and conversation—a valuable opportunity to truly bond with your travelling companions.
